Here’s the Emotional Side of Braces No One Talks About:
Feeling nervous to go to your dentist? I’ve been there, and had to get multiple teeth fixed.
When most people think about braces or Invisalign, they think about straighter teeth and a better smile. What’s often overlooked is the emotional side of orthodontic treatment.
For many patients (teens and adults alike ) this process can bring up anxiety, self-consciousness, frustration, and even avoidance. For me it was the anxiety part.
I put it off for months and it didn’t hurt anyone else but me.
The Reality Behind the Process
Orthodontic treatment isn’t a one-time fix. It’s a long-term journey that can last months or even years.
During that time, patients often experience:
- Feeling self-conscious about their appearance
- Anxiety before appointments
- Frustration with discomfort or slow progress
- Difficulty staying consistent with treatment routines
These experiences are completely normal, but rarely talked about.
Why These Feelings Matter
When emotional challenges go unaddressed, they can lead to:
- Missed appointments
- Inconsistent use of aligners
- Increased stress or avoidance
- Negative self-talk (“I look weird,” “This isn’t worth it”)
I was guilty of avoidance, not just out of slight negative self talk but also just work and life in general. My teeth wasn’t hurting so i felt…
Hey what would it hurt if i missed just one more day. It didn’t just affect how someone feels, it impacted the success of my treatment. And so I had to fix it or suffer the consequence.=
How Therapy Can Help
Therapy provides tools to support patients through this process, including:
- CBT techniques to challenge negative self-talk
- DBT skills to manage emotional discomfort
- ACT strategies to stay committed to long-term goals
- Motivational Interviewing to strengthen consistency
The goal isn’t just to “get through” treatment, it’s to feel supported while doing it.
A Different Kind of Support
Orthodontic care focuses on physical transformation. Therapy supports the emotional side of that transformation.
Together, they create a more complete experience. One where patients feel confident, supported, and empowered throughout the journey.
